If yours is a more traditional down near the floor thing or could ever be converted to wood i m sure you need a hearth.

I think it would look nice as we just redid the basement bathroom with the same flooring and it came out very nice.
Installing hardwood moldings around fireplace hearths has never been an attractive solution for covering up those gaps.

Place a scrap section of hardwood flooring and a piece of the underlayment you will be using on the subfloor flush against the fireplace where it meets the floor.
